BABELE collective exhibition at Spazio Musa

BABELE curated by Lucrezia Nardi

07.06.24 – 07.07.24
Spazio Musa, Via della Consolata 11, E, Turin, Italy

Babele is the result of an open call open to all and for all disciplines. A jury composed of Lucrezia Nardi, Francesco Longo and Pierluca Lobina selected forty-three artists to construct a contemporary Babel, which moves and is illuminated by the personalities of different artists, multiform and non-linear in terms of career, life and specificity of practice.

Babylon, as Genesis mentions, represents the human tendency to defy God, which can be traced back to the Hebrew bālal, meaning “to confuse”. What happens here is precisely a confusion of different practices, intuitions, sensibilities, languages and visions: because nothing is more useful than chaotic diversity to trace a seed of truth.

We are plural beings.

Babele collective exhibition Torino - Spazio Musa - Fabio Zanino

This project was born out of a desire to understand the temperature of our time, emerging spontaneously as the Babelic chaos we represent here. Are chaos and entropy really human testimonies? In a historical moment of war and widespread suffering, of divisions between peoples and creeds, we celebrate diversity, united under one roof, under one face: that of chaos, which nevertheless has its own intrinsic tendency to organise itself.

Reading through the more than 120 applications, there was a common line that allowed me not to get visitors lost in the process, but to build themed rooms, like a clue or an act, which you enter and leave to find a different and completely disconnected one. The themes found include: Drifts, Panism, Origin – Genesis, Rituals, Body, Fragments, Posthuman, Sex, Mythology, Ghosts, Architecture, Religion and Dystopia. The perception is therefore that of the whole, but it becomes personal by dwelling on each singularity, on each slice, on each necessary vision.

These forty-three artists are thus divided by feelings and affinities, colour palettes and textures, closeness of visions and deformity of opposites. In a process of selection, it emerges naturally: we are all beings immersed in the same time, however much we perceive it in such a personal and illusorily different way.

The selected artists are: Adriano Padovani, Aldo Formica, Alessandra Lanza, Alexander Fazari, Alberto Ribè, Angela Oregio Catelan, Anna Brignolo, Bruno Petronzi, Camellia Rostom, Caterina Biasi, Clara Gargano, Clara Toniolo, Coquelicot Mafille, Cristian Restivo, Cristina Saimandi, Damiano Fasso, Daniele Zerbi, Edoardo Bansone, Enrico Cargnino, Erika Godino, Fabio Zanino, Federica Gonnelli, Francesco Niccoli Stultus, Gaetano Frigo, Giovanna Mavilia, Giuse Iannello, Jorgelina Alessandrelli, Laura Ballocco, Luca Favaro, Luce Resinanti, Lucrezia Gentili, Marina Tabacco, Marta Scavone, Mikhail Vlasov, Miriam Modena, Riccardo Lo Nardo, Rovers Malaj, Salvo Bonfiglio, Samuele Marteno, Stefano Zaratin, Teo Martino, Tommaso Campini, Veronica Greisa.
